The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to recruit a Lecturer to undertake high-quality research and teaching. We are particularly interested in disciplinary expertise in one of the following areas:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Aerospace Propulsion Systems
  • Aircraft Stability and Control
  • Performance and Sustainability of Aircraft
  • Design of Aerospace Systems

These research areas are aligned with Faculty research centres, including IAAPS, a world-leading centre of excellence supporting the transport industry in the transition to net zero. Teaching will support our MEng undergraduate degree programmes, including Aerospace, Engineering, as well as new MSc programmes under development. Our degree programmes have an outstanding reputation built on industry-linked teaching, rigorous academic standards, placement-provision, and graduate employability. As well as lecturing, you will be expected to participate in supervising students undertaking significant individual and group projects encompassing research or design activities.

We are one of the leading Mechanical Engineering Departments in the UK and provide a progressive academic environment. Our Aerospace Engineering degree is currently ranked 4th in the 2026 Guardian and Complete University Guide League Tables, and 6th in the 2025 Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide. About you

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) and developing research track record in one of the above areas. You will be expected to publish high-quality research papers, supervise postgraduate research students, and have the potential to apply for and attract significant external research funding. You will also engage with one or more of our Faculty-wide inter-disciplinary research centres covering energy (generation, transmission and storage, including future fuels), Net Zero, biomedical engineering, sustainability and climate change adaptation.

Application requirements

As well as your online application, you must provide the following uploaded as additional documents (these are mandatory):

  1. A CV of no more than 4 pages, covering current and key previous employment, education including degree titles/departments/universities, published journal and conference papers, and a brief summary of research and teaching experience. Note that this may be distributed widely within the Department for comment as part of the recruitment process and please ensure that personal contact details (address/phone/email) and any other sensitive information are not included. The document should be called ‘4-page CV’.
  2. A four-page outline of a potential research grant application and be prepared to discuss this at interview. Typically for Lecturer grade applicants, this application would be aimed at the EPSRC New Investigator Award and it would be expected that the successful candidate submits this within the first year of the appointment. The document should be called ‘Research proposal’.

As part of the selection process, you will normally be required to give a presentation to academic staff in the Department before being shortlisted for formal interview.

We are seeking a Research Associate to join us in contributing to an exciting, project in Engineering Dynamics and Signal Processing. 

This role sits within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the 四虎影院.  

Duties will include

As a Research Associate, you will play a key role in

  • Designing and executing laboratory experiments, 
  • Integrating sensing hardware
  • Capturing high-quality data under controlled vibration loading 
  • Building experience in engineering dynamics
  • Signal processing
  • Applied research

This is an exciting position that will allow the successful candidate to gain valuable experience in engineering dynamics.

About the candidate

We are looking for someone who can bring strong technical expertise, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to this project. 

You will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g. Mechanical/Electrical/Civil Engineering, or similar), or equivalent professional experience at doctoral level.
  • Knowledge of dynamics and/or signal processing.
  • Experience with experimental testing, data acquisition, or laboratory-based research.
  • Ability to organise your own workload and contribute effectively to project milestones.
  • Clear communication skills, enabling you to work productively with academic and industrial teams.
  • Proficiency in relevant computational tools (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or equivalent).

Experience with non-contact sensing methods, or AI-based pattern recognition, would be helpful but not essential.
