This project will develop new machine learning techniques to enable efficient production of bespoke products, such as medicines in a high-volume, high-variation manufacturing setting. It will focus on the problem of sequential decision making, with an emphasis on approaches that could eventually be deployed into real scenarios to improve industrial processes. Relevant areas of research include reinforcement learning and probabilistic machine learning. This post is funded by EPSRC as part of the project "Transforming the future use of injectable medicines: Increasing capacity in the NHS". 

About you

Candidates will be expected to design and develop novel machine learning techniques that are robust and applicable to real industrial scenarios. This project has substantial flexibility in how it can be approached and an ideal candidate would demonstrate creative problem solving and independent working with a proactive approach to research.

The Research Associate will work closely with project investigators Professor Özgür 艦im艧ek and Dr Tom SF Haines. They will be part of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the 四虎影院, as well as the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group within the Department of Computer Science.

This post is a full time, fixed term contract for two years, with a potential extension to three years. There is associated funding for conference attendance. The start date is flexible.

Following a successful online interview, candidates will be invited to visit the 四虎影院 campus. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Initial shortlisting will take place on 30 April, with first-round online interviews tentatively scheduled for the week of 11 May.

As a member of Research 四虎影院 at the 四虎影院, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

This part-time fixed-term role will manage the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent Artificial Intelligence (ART-AI) as part of a job share arrangement with the current post-holder. Working closely with CDT staff, the CDT Management Team and external partners, this will be a wide-ranging role with responsibility for delivering the strategy of the Centre with a view to the long-term as well as day-to-day operations.

You will be responsible for proposing and implementing strategies to ensure the Centre's research has high level impact. You will pursue additional funding for the Centre, and will initiate, develop and deepen long term engagement and relationships with external partners with a view to securing future funding and collaborative agreements.

About you

You will be someone with experience of higher education administration, with a focus on postgraduate research training. You will understand the funding environment in which university postgraduate provision operates and will be able to demonstrate experience in acquiring such funding. You will understand the needs and aspirations of postgraduate students and will be able to contribute to their academic success sensitively and professionally.

You will be someone with the ability to act as a key channel of communication between students, academic staff, professional services staff and external organisations, and will have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team being essential. You will demonstrate commitment to high quality service provision and understand the value and importance of doctoral training and research to the University's strategic goals as well as in society at large. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to suggest and deliver operational plans to achieve strategic goals and will be able to work autonomously while keeping colleagues informed and engaged.
