We are seeking an outstanding and collaborative individual with a passion for both research and teaching to contribute to the continued success, operation and development of Chemical Engineering at Bath. You will be integral to increasing our well-established research activities in future-focused technologies for sustainability and preparing the next generation to play a key role in achieving sustainable manufacturing through our highly rated undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Our degree courses in chemical engineering and environmental engineering prepare our students to tackle the global challenges we face, such as climate change, and the delivery of sustainable water, energy, food and wellbeing. The Department benefits from extensive national and international collaboration, excellent research and teaching facilities, and strong links with industry

About you

We are looking for someone whose track record demonstrates the potential for, or realisation of, internationally leading research in tissue engineering or precision fermentation applied to cellular agriculture manufacturing. The post-holder will become a member of CARMA, an EPSRC funded Sustainable Manufacturing Hub on Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing, which has the vision to transform food production, transitioning to an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable model in which novel cellular agriculture manufacturing systems complement traditional food production. Find out more .

We particularly welcome candidates with expertise in tissue engineering or precision fermentation and applied in one or more of the following areas:

  • Bioreactor design, build and operation, utilising multiscale fluid dynamics
  • Bioreactor in silico multiscale modelling of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
  • Bioprocess in silico modelling
  • Interface and circularity between animal cell culture and microbial culture
  • Upstream-downstream interface (harvesting; fluid dynamics and thermodynamics)
  • Cell line development for optimising scaled production

A research focus on scaffolds and materials, techno-economic analysis, life cycle analysis and downstream processing will be less competitive.

You will be a kind and culturally aware leader who fosters an environment where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. You will understand that change is inevitable and necessary, actively encouraging your team to adapt and evolve. By promoting a culture of openness and inclusivity, you will create a dynamic and empowered team that can thrive in today's changing world.

We welcome both wet lab and in silico research activities, including the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning. You will be a member of one of the Faculty of Engineering & Design Research Centres, as well as the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change (ISCC). You will have access to students on PhD programmes such as Sustainable Chemical Technologies.

For an informal discussion, please contact Prof. Duren (td222@bath.ac.uk), Head of Department or Dr. Herdes Moreno (cehm21@bath.ac.uk), Deputy Head of Department.

Application Requirements & Selection Process

Together with a full CV, please provide two statements, each of up to two pages:

  • A research statement which should include your vision and plans including an outline of how you will establish independent research at Bath. Your research statement needs to outline your plans and intentions for research activity and grant capture over the coming five years. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership.

  • A teaching and EDI statement. This document should outline your teaching vision and plans. Please also explain how your experiences and qualifications give you the knowledge and skills to teach across the breadth of core (bio)chemical engineering in our taught degrees and how you would contribute. Please describe how you incorporate principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion into your daily activities, especially when training and working with students and researchers. Please also outline how you have contributed to creating a positive, respectful, and collegiate environment for all staff and students.

Both documents are mandatory components of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.

You will be expected to undertake personal tutoring of some students as part of the role and will be responsible for assessment of elements of our programmes.

There is a strong culture of providing newly appointed lecturers the necessary support and freedom to develop their academic careers. We would like you to have the future ambition to take on leadership roles within and/or outside the Department at an appropriate stage in your career. These roles can lead to promotion and the University has a well-established career progression route for academic staff.
