What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is the UK Government鈥檚 programme that provides funding for students to study and work abroad. It offers opportunities to develop new skills, gain international experience, enhance employability, deepen culture understanding, and improve or learn a new language.

Where can I go?

Which countries can I go to?

The Turing Scheme is fully international and allows participants to travel to destinations worldwide provided that foreign travel advice produced by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is followed.

Where can I do a study abroad placement?

The University has a number of established partnerships with higher education institutions across the world. Please speak to your department鈥檚 exchange coordinator to explore opportunities for your area of study.

Where can I do a work placement?

You could do a placement at any public or private organisation active in the labour market or in the fields of education and training.

For example:

  • A public or private, a small, medium or large enterprise (including social enterprises)
  • A public body at local, regional or national level
  • A social partner or other representative of working life, including chambers of commerce, craft/professional association, and trade unions
  • A research institute
  • A foundation
  • A school/institute/education centre (at any level, from primary school to upper secondary school education, including vocational and adult education)
  • A non-profit organisation, association, non-governmental organisation (NGO)
  • A body providing career guidance, professional counselling, and information services

Eligibility

How do I know if I am eligible for funding?

To be eligible to apply for the 四虎影院's Turing Scheme funding, you must:

be registered at the 四虎影院 and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree (all levels of study, up to and including doctorate, are eligible)

participate in an in-person study or work placement abroad (remote/virtual activities are not eligible)

be 18 years or older at the time of departure

not be a national citizen of the destination country (e.g., Spanish nationals on placement in Madrid would not be eligible for funding)

not receive funding from another source for the same activity (e.g., BRID fund, Mitacs)

not have already received Turing Scheme funding in the 2025/26 academic year

undertake a study exchange or work placement abroad lasting between 14 days and 12 months

undertake the placement between 1st September 2026 and 31st August 2027 (placements outside this time period would not be eligible for funding)

You do not need to be a UK national to apply.

What if some of my placement is outside of the eligible dates?

If your placement takes place outside of these dates, you can still apply for funding. However, you will only receive funding for the portion of your placement that falls within the eligible period. The funded activity must still meet the 14-day minimum requirement.

Funding

Will the funding cover the cost of my whole placement?

Funding is provided as a contribution towards the general cost of living abroad. Grants will NOT cover the full cost of your placement.

How much funding can I apply for?

The amount of funding available depends on your destination country and the length of your placement.

How do I know if I meet the disadvantaged background criteria?

For the purposes of the Turing Scheme, participants are considered to come from a disadvantaged background if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Annual household income of 拢25,000 or less
  • Receiving Universal Credit or other income-related benefits because they are financially supporting themselves, or themselves and a dependent (e.g. a child or partner)
  • Care leavers or care-experienced students. This includes anyone who has been in care at any stage, even briefly, including adopted children who were previously looked after
  • Students with caring responsibilities - Providing unpaid care to someone who could not cope without their support.
  • Estranged students - those with no contact (written or verbal) with either parent, typically for 12 months or more, with expectation of this changing.
  • refugees and asylum seekers.

If I am eligible and I apply, will I definitely get funding?

No. Funding is extremely limited and NOT guaranteed. Eligibility for the Scheme does not mean your application will be successful.

When will I get the money if I am successful?

Funds will not be issued immediately. If your application is successful, funding will be only be processed once all required documentation has been submitted. You should not count on Turing Scheme funding when budgeting for a mobility abroad.

Travel Restrictions

If the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to your destination country, your application will not be eligible for funding.
