Occupations, industries and skills

Economics degrees provide broad social sciences training in how consumer and producer choices affect resource supply and demand. Graduates develop valuable employer-sought skills including teamwork, communication, and advanced critical, analytical and quantitative abilities. Their specialist knowledge of economic principles and theory leads to diverse roles across private and public sectors.

Industries

Economics graduates work extensively in financial services, including retail, private and investment banks, asset management, accountancy firms and insurance companies. Many join professional services and consultancy firms, while others pursue careers across Civil Service departments and public sector organisations such as regulatory bodies, local government, the NHS and education. Commercial businesses across various sectors also employ economics graduates in analytical and strategic roles.

Occupations

Economics graduates often begin in financial positions such as accountancy, actuarial work, risk analysis, investment analysis and trading. Many work as economists and consultants or move into data and technology roles including data analysis and software engineering. Other common career paths include project management, human resources, teaching, and sales and marketing positions.
